The dispensation system for infirm priests is a particularly interesting test bed, revealing the long-term sedimentation of practices and discourses that interpret infirmity. By tracing the centuries-old history of this system and analysing a series of cases from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries, we can see that the object of this practice is precisely the measurement of the infirm body, with its liturgical and social effects.
