Abstract: In Algerian hospitals, French holds a significant place despite a national language policy that exclusively promotes Arabic. This paradox raises debates about the use of French as an indispensable communication tool in the healthcare sector and its potential impact on the linguistic identity of professionals. This study explores the linguistic dynamics in Algerian hospitals, questioning the role of French: is it a facilitator of technical communication or a source of cultural and identity tensions? Through a field study, this research examines daily language practices and their implications for the identity of health care professionals, situating the phenomenon within the broader context of Algeria’s sociolinguistic landscape.
