Abstract: The deficiency of the mechanisms of democratic control and accountability in the functioning of the EU has been widely discussed by the doctrine. Although, in general, there are conflicting opinions, consensus is greater when the debate is limited to the field of the EMU. That is particularly because as a reaction to the sovereign debt, ad hoc actions have been prioritised in this area, eminently those of intergovernmental nature and outside the Community method. The complexity abounds with the lack of transparency of the functioning of the institutions, structures and representatives in this field. However, the difficult return to «normality» within the euro zone seems to become over time in an ally to the objective of establishing a true European economic policy. If that works so as to simplify the functioning and to clarify the role of the responsible different institutions, the quality of the democratic control and accountability will be improved.
