Association of Anxiety (Chittodvega) in Leukoderma (Shvitra) – A Cross-Sectional Study

      Introduction:Human health is maintained by physical, physiological, and psychological. Ayurveda gives universal methods to live in healthy way and also focus on cure of diseases. In Ayurveda, skin diseases are discussed under the umbrella of Kushtha. Physical problems are related with mental status. The study showed the relation between anxiety and skin disease. The stressful condition in the skin, hormone, and blood flow relapses the skin disorder. Anxiety and Chittodvega is analog. In Ayurveda it is believed that skin disease affects person psychology. Shvitra did not have pain and uneasiness. Methods:A validated pro forma of Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale was used for the assessment of Chittodvega (anxiety). The scale consists of both psychic anxiety (mental agitation and psychological distress) and somatic anxiety (physical complaints related to anxiety). There were two groups: Group A (Shvitra) and B (healthy) with a sample size of 100. Results:The prevalence of anxiety was 98% in Group A and 84% in Group B. On degree of anxiety, 64% of subjects had mild, 28% of subjects had mild-to-moderate, 6% of subjects had moderate-to-severe anxiety in Group A, whereas 74% of subjects had mild, 9% of subjects had mild-to-moderate, and 1% of subjects had moderate-to-severe anxiety in Group B. Mann–Whitney test in intergroup comparison found 8 were extremely significant, 2 were significant and 4 were non– significant. Association among the Shvitra and Chittodvega by odds ratio in anxious mood, tension, fear, insomnia, somatic muscular, cardiovascular symptoms and gastro intestinal system very significant P < 0.001 and intellectual P < 0.005 found significant. Conclusion:Chittodvega (anxiety) is more in Shvitra patients than healthy persons. Mental disturbances are associated with Shvitra.
