    • Abstract:
Producers' sustainability is tightly related to distribution channels. A comprehensive analysis is needed for identifying the perceived sustainability impacts in a more holistic way that channels provide to small producers. This paper proposes a synthetic sustainability indicator based on the FAO’s sustainability assessment of food and agricultural systems (SAFA) applied to 8 distribution channels from 6 different supply chains in three countries. The weights of 20 economic, environmental, social, and governance indicators on 8 distribution channels were assessed using expert and stakeholders’ opinions using Delphi method and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Results showed the economic pillar as the most important for a holistic assessment of sustainability The direct Sales channel was the most sustainable alternative in all case studies, highlighting the importance of the short food supply chain as most sustainable distribution alternative.
