    • Abstract:
This epilogue draws together and expands on discussions in the volume in order to highlight the issue of public controversy around the scientific uses of fetal material during the Swedish postwar period. First, it reviews the claim made by previous historical research that human tissue culture was widely regarded as unproblematic in Britain and the United States. Then it revisits the actors and interests involved in establishing Sweden as a hospitable environment for international human fetal research and discusses how strategies to gain legitimacy were developed. After that, building on controversy studies as well as perspectives from ignorance studies, it argues that ‘public controversy’ in this context must be understood as a multifaceted phenomenon, including ‘uncontroversy,’ ‘tamed controversy,’ and ‘selective controversy.’ Finally, it concludes by relating the Swedish case to the international arena as described by historical scholarship.
