- Abstract:
A process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in groundwater, the process comprises the steps of: installing a permeable reactive barrier in the flow path of the at least one contaminant, wherein the installation of the permeable reactive barrier comprises the steps of: boring a first borehole with a portion longitudinally extending; filling the longitudinally extending portion with a reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; boring a second longitudinally extending portion and filling the second longitudinally extending portion with the reactive material.

- Claim:
1. A process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume, the process comprises the steps of: installing a permeable reactive barrier with a boring device, the permeable reactive barrier being configured and disposed to intercept the migration of at least one groundwater contaminant in the groundwater plume, the installation of the permeable reactive barrier comprising the steps of: boring a first borehole with a first longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater; filling the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole with a reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater plume to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; retracting the boring device from the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole and into the first borehole, without removing the boring device from the ground; boring a second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater; and filling the longitudinally extending portion of the second borehole with the reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater plume to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; passing at least a portion of the at least one contaminant through a portion of the permeable reactive barrier; and reacting at least a portion of the at least one contaminant with a portion of the permeable reactive barrier to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant.
- Claim:
2. The process of claim 1 wherein said step of boring a second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater comprises boring the second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater proximate the first longitudinally extending portion.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein said step of boring a second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater comprises boring the second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater substantially parallel with the first longitudinally extending portion.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein said step of boring a first borehole with a first longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater comprises boring the first longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater substantially parallel with an upper surface of the groundwater.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein said step of boring a second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater comprises boring the second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater in substantially a common plane with the first longitudinally extending portion.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein said step of boring a second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater comprises boring the second longitudinally extending portion in the groundwater in substantially a common vertical plane with the first longitudinally extending portion.
- Claim:
7. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 1 wherein said reactive material comprises one or more oxidants, reductants, catalysts, chelants, transition metal amine complexes, and other constituents that effectuate an initial, intermediate, or final reaction with an organic compound.
- Claim:
8. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 1 wherein said reactive material comprises at least one of: peroxides, permanganates, persulfates, hypochlorite solutions, ozone, zero valent iron, fluorine, sodium bisulfate, metabisulfide, and polysulfides.
- Claim:
9. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 1 wherein said solid reactant of said reactive material comprises particles substantially encapsulated with an encapsulant having a characteristic selected from the group consisting of substantially oleophilic, hydrophobic, siliphilic, hydrocarbon soluble, and combinations thereof.
- Claim:
10. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 1 comprising at least one of a)-f), wherein a)-f) are: a) said boring of longitudinally extending portions comprises boring with a drill head having a duckbill attached thereto; b) said boring of longitudinally extending portions comprises boring with a slurry comprising said reactive material; c) said boring of longitudinally extending portions comprises water jetting with a slurry comprising said reactive material; d) said filling the longitudinally extending portions with a reactive material comprise inserting a tube or pipe configured to permit flow of water through a circumferential surface thereof, said tube or pipe containing said reactive material; e) said boring of longitudinally extending portions comprises boring with a directional drill rig; and f) said boring of longitudinally extending portions comprises boring with a directional drill rig comprising a sonde or transmitter located behind the drill bit, the sonde or transmitter being configured to report the angle, rotation, and direction of the drill bit to a directional drill rig operator.
- Claim:
11. A process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume, the process comprises the steps of: installing a permeable reactive barrier configured and disposed to intercept the migration of at least one groundwater contaminant in the groundwater plume, wherein the installation of the permeable reactive barrier comprises the steps of: boring a first borehole with a portion longitudinally extending substantially parallel with an upper surface of the groundwater; filling the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole with a reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater plume to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; boring a second borehole with a portion substantially parallel with the upper surface of the groundwater; and filling the longitudinally extending portion of the second borehole with the reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater plume to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; passing at least a portion of the at least one contaminant through a portion of the permeable reactive barrier; and reacting at least a portion of the at least one contaminant with a portion of the permeable reactive barrier to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant.
- Claim:
12. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 11 wherein said first borehole and said second borehole have a common head.

13. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 11 wherein the longitudinally extending portion of the first and second boreholes are disposed substantially in a common plane.

14. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 13 wherein the longitudinally extending portion of the first and second boreholes are disposed substantially in a common vertical plane.
- Claim:
15. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 11 wherein the longitudinally extending portion of the first and second boreholes are disposed substantially parallel with each other.
- Claim:
16. A process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume, the process comprises the steps of: installing a permeable reactive barrier configured and disposed to intercept the migration of at least one groundwater contaminant, wherein the installation of the permeable reactive barrier comprises the steps of: boring a first borehole with a portion longitudinally extending substantially parallel with an upper surface of the groundwater; filling the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole with a reactive material comprising a solid reactant configured to react with the at least one contaminant in the groundwater plume to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant; boring a second borehole with a portion substantially parallel to the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole; and filling the portion of the second borehole substantially parallel to the longitudinally extending portion of the first borehole with the reactive material; intercepting at least a portion of the at least one contaminant with the permeable reactive barrier; and reacting at least a portion of the at least one contaminant with a portion of the permeable reactive barrier to produce at least one product having less hazardous characteristics than the at least one contaminant.
- Claim:
17. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 16 wherein said first borehole and said second borehole have a common head.

18. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 16 wherein the longitudinally extending portion of the first and second boreholes are disposed substantially in a common plane.

19. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 18 wherein the longitudinally extending portion of the first and second boreholes are disposed substantially in a common vertical plane.
- Claim:
20. The process for insitu treatment of at least one contaminant in a groundwater plume of claim 16 comprising at least one of a)-d), wherein a)-d) are: a) said reactive material comprises an oxidant or a reductant; b) said reactive material comprises at least one of: peroxides, permanganates; persulfates, hypochlorite solutions, ozone, zero valent iron, fluorine, sodium bisulfate, metabisulfide, and polysulfides; c) said reactive material comprises particles substantially encapsulated with an encapsulant having a characteristic selected from the group consisting of substantially oleophilic, hydrophobic, siliphilic, hydrocarbon soluble, and combinations thereof; and d) said reactive material comprises one or more catalysts, chelants, transition metal amine complexes, and other constituents that effectuate an initial, intermediate, or final reaction with an organic compound.
