A hospital bed includes a frame, a plurality of extendable patient support panels mounted to the frame, and a slide mechanism. Each patient support panel includes a central section and at least one coplanar side section selectively movable laterally towards and away from the central section, where the at least one coplanar side section is slidably connected to the corresponding central section. The slide mechanism allows sliding movement of the at least one side section relative to the corresponding central section.

1. A bed comprising: a frame; a plurality of extendable patient support panels mounted to the frame, each patient support panel comprising a central section and at least one side section selectively movable laterally towards and away from the central section to adjust a width of the patient support panel, the at least one side section being slidably connected to the central section; an extendable endboard mounted to the frame, the endboard comprising a first endboard portion and a second endboard portion slidably connected to the first endboard portion, the first and second endboard portions being movable laterally towards and away from each other to adjust a width of the endboard; and a movement transmission assembly mechanically connecting at least one of the first and second endboard portions to the at least one side section such that the at least one of the first and second endboard portions moves laterally towards when the at least one side section is moved laterally.

2. The bed of claim 1, wherein the movement transmission assembly includes a plurality of flexible transmission members that interconnect the at least one side section of the patient support panels and the endboard.

3. The bed of claim 2, wherein the flexible transmission members include: a first flexible transmission member connected to the first endboard portion; and a second flexible transmission member connected to the at least one side section of a given one of the patient support panels.

4. The bed of claim 3, wherein: the at least one side section of each patient support panel includes a first side section and a second side section movable in opposite directions; the second flexible transmission member is connected to the first side section of the given one of the patient support panels; and the flexible transmission members include: a third flexible transmission member connected to the second endboard portion; and a fourth flexible transmission member connected to the second side section of the given one of the patient support panels.

5. The bed of claim 2, wherein the flexible transmission members are connected together such that movement of one of the flexible transmission members causes movement of all of the flexible transmission members.

6. The bed of claim 2, wherein each flexible transmission member includes a cable core and a sheath surrounding the cable core.

7. The bed of claim 2, wherein each flexible transmission member has a first cable end connected to a corresponding side section and a second cable end connected to the same corresponding side section.

8. The bed of claim 7, wherein the first and second cable ends point towards each other such that pulling the flexible transmission member in a first direction moves the corresponding side section laterally in a first lateral direction and pulling the flexible transmission member in a second direction opposite the first direction moves the corresponding side section laterally in a second lateral direction opposite the first lateral direction.

9. The bed of claim 2, further comprising a width adjustment actuator operatively connected to at least one of the flexible transmission members to selectively pull the flexible transmission members in a first direction and a second direction opposite the first direction.

10. The bed of claim 9, wherein the width adjustment actuator is a linear actuator.

11. The bed of claim 9, further comprising a manual actuation assembly including a handle operatively connected to the width adjustment actuator.

12. The bed of claim 1, wherein the endboard is adapted to be selectively extended and contracted simultaneously with the patient support panels at the same speed as the patient support panels.

13. The bed of claim 1, wherein the endboard includes a horizontal guide rod slidably engaging the first and second endboard portions.

14. The bed of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the first and second endboard portions moves by a same given distance than the at least one side section.

15. The bed of claim 1, wherein: the frame comprises an end frame member extending transversely to a longitudinal axis of the bed; the endboard is mounted to the end frame member; the endboard includes an extension member adapted to move laterally towards and away from the end frame member; and the first endboard portion is mounted to the extension member.

16. The bed of claim 15, wherein the end frame member is hollow and houses the extension member.

17. The bed of claim 1, wherein the first and second endboard portions overlap at least partially and are substantially complementary in shape such that the endboard maintains a same thickness.

18. The bed of claim 1, wherein one of the first and second endboard portions defines an internal cavity sized and shaped to receive and encase at least part of the other one of the first and second endboard portions.

19. The bed of claim 1, wherein the endboard is a headboard.
