L'influence du complexe de protection contre les inondations sur la situation écologique du littoral du golfe de Finlande (Russie) / The impact of the flood protection system upon the coastal ecology of the gulf of Finland (Russia)

Pour protéger Saint-Pétersbourg d'inondations fréquentes et parfois catastrophiques, on a entrepris de construire, entre la baie de la Néva et le golfe de Finlande, une digue de protection. A la fin des années 1980 on l'accuse, alors qu'elle est encore inachevée, d'aggraver la pollution dans la baie. Malgré l'absence de preuves, on en suspend l'achèvement en 1990. Quatre ans plus tard, en raison d'une amélioration de la qualité des eaux à la faveur du ralentissement des activités industrielles dû à la crise économique en Russie, on décide de reprendre la construction devant la persistance du danger d'inondation.
To protect Saint-Pétersbourg from frequent and, sometimes, disastrous floods, a dam is being built between the Neva bay and the gulf of Finland. At the end of the 1980s it is not finished but it seems that the bay is increasingly polluted. Despite the lack of evidence, it was decided to stop work on the project in 1990. However, four years later, following an improvement in water quality, resulting from a reduction in industrial activity due to the Russian economic crisis, it was decided to recommence construction of the dam because of the persistant danger of dangerous flooding.
