Between 10,000 to 15,000 dead and 5,000 prisoners of war, was the cost that Egypt paid in the Six-Day War in 1967, which continued only four days. More than that, Egypt’s army lost nearly 70% of its artillery equipment, 400 aircraft and 300 tanks. Egypt’s army was crushed and shredded, and along with it, Nasser’s regime as well. Immediately after the Six-Day War, the Soviets started to arm Egypt’s army in order to bring it the same level as the armed forces Egypt had before the war. This move was made out of a will to address the USSR’s global and regional interests in the Middle East. The article’s aim is to investigate the Soviets’ intervention in Egypt, and afterwards, the threat they presented to Israel in the War of Attrition. The article does not deal with the intelligence aspects of this issue, at whose center stands the USA-Israel relations against the background of the Soviets’ threat and Egypt’s strategy of depth bombing Israel during the War of Attrition. This point is very important to bring out, since the bone of contention between Israel and the USA, as the article claims, is whether these depth bombings led to and maybe worsened the Soviets penetration into Egypt, as claimed by the Americans, or if it was perhaps this penetration that escalated the war between Israel and Egypt during the War of Attrition, as Israel claimed.
