Macroeconomic determinants and consequences of political instability ; Les déterminants et les conséquences macroéconomiques de l'instabilité politique

The object of this thesis was to analyze the macroeconomic determinants and consequences of political instability for developing countries between 1975 and 2015. In the first chapter, we studied the economic and institutional determinants of political instability, the results of which demonstrate how the effect of spread and executive age increase two forms of political instability with amplified effects for both short and long-term informal political instability. For the second chapter, we measured the impact of our indicators for political instability as well as the two latent dimensions of formal and informal political stability that affect economic growth, highlighting the role good governance plays within the relationship between political instability and economic growth. Through a PTR model, the results indicate the presence of a nonlinear relationship between economic growth and the two latent forms of economic stability: formal and informal. Finally, the last chapter examines the link between volatility in economic growth, political instability, and democracy. Our estimations demonstrate that the two latent variables of political instability have no statistical effect on economic volatility when tested simultaneously through a simultaneous equation model. ; L'objet de cette thèse avait pour objectif d'analyser les déterminants et les conséquences macroéconomiques de l'instabilité politique dans les pays en voie de développement sur la période 1975 à 2015.
