In the present work a reflection is carried out on the potentialities offered by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the study of Settlement Systems, specifically in rural areas. The implementation process of these systems is based on a theoretical analysis of the fundamental problem, the ways and means of studying it, mainly the need to use quantitative measures that bring specialists closer to a knowledge of the phenomenon. The aforementioned aspects are previously addressed and summarized so that as a whole they can form the fundamental theoretical assumptions for the design and implementation of a Geographic Information System that allows the study and analysis of the spatial structure of the Settlement Systems. populations in rural areas. ; En el presente trabajo se realiza una reflexión sobre las potencialidades que brindan los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) para el estudio de los Sistemas de Asentamientos, específicamente en los espacios rurales. Esta temática ha sido tradicionalmente abordada en los estudios de planificación regional y urbana; la diferencia fundamental esta asociada a la propuesta de asumir estas investigaciones con herramientas novedosas (SIG) que facilitan la obtención de resultados de manera eficiente. El proceso de implementación de estos sistemas parte de un análisis teórico de la problemática fundamental, las formas y maneras de estudiarlo, principalmente la necesidad de la utilización de medidas cuantitativas que acerquen a los especialistas a un conocimiento del fenómeno.
