Internet-based applications and websites that promote the sharing of user-generated content, communication, and participation on a large scale. Since the early 2000s social media has taken the internet by storm, and by February 2021, according to the Pew Research Center, approximately 72 percent of adults in the United States used some type of social media. A large variety of user-generated applications makes up what is considered social media. These applications include blogs, social networks such as Facebook and TikTok, and audio podcasts. Over time, social media has become used for marketing and as an alternative news source. Although the aim of social media is to make it easier for individuals to communicate and engage in conversations, many argue that it has led to a reduction in human interaction.
